The Fault in Our Stars is currently outselling Breaking Dawn and Twilight. I just thought the nerdfighters would appreciate this :)
Here’s a thing that I hate.
My immense and complete infatuation with John Green’s writing in NO WAY INFLUENCES my feelings towards Stephenie Meyer’s writing. I was literally just watching John’s review of Twilight and New Moon and I love him for it. Because yes, they suck, and the movies are stupid, but they transport you out of day to day life and put you somewhere else for a short period of time, which is what I read them for.
I find that in Nerdfighteria, there is a consensus that Twilight sucks, and those of us who read/enjoy them, are a slightly lower caliber of wizar- I mean, Nerdfighter. Which bothers me. A lot. In the facebook group for the Nerdfighters of the Greater DC Area (of which I’m a member, and you should be to!), there was a discussion a few months back about fandom-bashing. We basically agreed that before you say something about anything, you stop, and think… “If someone said this about Harry Potter/The Hunger Games/Choose Your Fandom, would I be pissed off? Hurt? Offended?” If you would you, be you don’t say it. Which is really not all that complicated.
I find it slightly obnoxious that in a lot of Nerdfighteria, if you don’t fall in to the stereotypically Nerdfighterly fandoms (Harry Potter, Dr. Who, Sherlock, The Hunger Games, etc etc), it becomes a lot harder to become part of the group. There’s this built in argot, this secret language, that if you don’t understand, well, screw it.
For the record, YES, OBVIOUSLY I AM HAPPY THAT TFIOS IS #1 ON AMAZON! Of course I am! This book made me laugh and cry and sob and fall madly in love with Augustus Waters & Hazel Grace Lancaster. But I would still be as happy with it being #1 if it were beating Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or The Name of the Star, or whatever.
Anyways, this is a rant that has been building up in me since yesterday, when I decided to watch New Moon after I couldn’t find Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince, and was judged immensely for it. I CAN STRADDLE THESE FANDOMS WITH NO PROBLEM, THANK YOU!
